With deep sadness, we share the tragic news that Dixie Lewis ’24, a rising sophomore and member of the softball team, passed away Tuesday in a car accident.
Before coming to Pomona, at Berkeley High School in the Bay Area, she was a four-year varsity softball player and scholar-athlete who also volunteered for Aspire Education's Reading Buddies program.
“There is nothing Dixie wanted more in the world than to be on Pomona’s campus and play with her pals on the softball team for Coach Ferguson,” said Dixie's mother, Tabitha Soren. “It was her dream and the culmination of so much training that she kept up with all through lockdown. Her virtual Pomona classmates helped her navigate the two COVID semesters and we will be forever grateful to them for forging bonds with our daughter through mere screens.”
“The team is heartbroken,” added Pomona-Pitzer Softball Coach Joanne Ferguson. “As an athlete, Dixie quickly drew our attention due to her talents on the field – but once she joined our team, it was her warm spirit, positive energy and big smile that won our hearts. Dixie made a lasting positive impact on our team this year, and she will forever be part of the Sagehen softball family.”
The College will provide an update when additional information on a memorial service becomes available. Please do not hesitate to reach outreach out to our office at studentaffairs@pomona.edu, as we mourn Dixie’s passing as a community.
