Casting Policy
Â鶹´«Ã½ values creating a space in which all beings can flourish, thrive, and create, knowing that their personhood will be respected and honored. We also recognize that each person carries with them a multitude of experiences and cultural influences.
In short, we recognize and honor the brilliant complexity of our humanity.
We are in the process of building our anti-racist framework and guidelines to aid in our creation of a compassionate, dynamic, inclusive artistic space.
In the meantime, we know and will hold to the following:
- The Â鶹´«Ã½ Theatre Department recognizes the importance of a clear and transparent casting process. We invite students of all gender orientations, ethnicities, body types, abilities, races, religious beliefs, and experience levels to audition for our productions.
- We invite non-binary, gender non-conforming and trans students to audition for any roles they feel comfortable playing on stage.
- We aim to serve the needs of student growth while honoring inclusive casting practices and faithfulness to the playwright’s intentions.
- We aim for consent-based processes in our casting, including transparency around staged intimacy in our casting notices as well as bringing on an intimacy director for all productions.
The Department recognizes the intrinsic educational value in its productions, and endeavors to provide significant performance opportunities. Therefore, a student may be cast in only one faculty directed production per semester.
Once a student is cast in a production, they are expected to attend all rehearsals to which they are called; we expect full attendance for tech week and performances.
The Department encourages students to direct any questions about casting to the director, production manager, and/or department chair.

What do I need to prepare?
For auditions, please come prepared with a monologue (from your favorite play, musical, song lyrics, or poem - material that you love and care about).
Actors who are interested in the roles of HULDEY and/or EMILIE should also bring 16-32 bars (30seconds) of an acapella song.
Callbacks will be group or paired activities which will include cold readings from the script. Students of ALL experience levels and abilities are encouraged to audition!

I'm really thrilled to be back directing Jen Silverman's queer masterpiece "The Moors" in the Allen Theatre in 2025! Can't wait to dive in and work on this genre-defying play, which is one part Gothic horror, one part dark comedy, and one part feminist manifesto about power, love and longing... 100% fun!
What is the play about?
The Moors by Jen Silverman
Two sisters and a dog live out their lives on the bleak English moors,dreaming of love and power. The arrival of a hapless governess and amoor-hen set all three on a strange and dangerous path. The Moors is a dark comedy about love, desperation, and visibility.

The Moors is an atmospheric, gothic comedy which contains frank discussions of depression and suicidal ideation and depicts familial and romantic violence and abuse, including neglect, coersion, control, and murder.
Feel free to ask any questions about the charged content in this show if you need more information in order to consent to a role/being a part of this production.
Who are the characters?
Characters:
Agatha - Female. Elder spinster sister. Spidery. Dangerous. Powerful.
Huldey - Female. Younger spinster sister. She has a diary. She wants to be famous.
Emilie - Female. The governess. A romantic with a sweet face.
Marjory - Female. The scullery maid. Down-trodden. Strategic.
The Mastiff - Male. The dog. A sad philosopher-king.
A Moor-hen - Female. A small chicken. Practical and very present-tense.
Intimacy and Fight Choreography Short Notice:
Agatha: The character Agatha is the older sister to Huldey, whom Agatha chastises and dismisses. Huldey later kills Agatha. Agatha falls in love with the character Emilie.
Huldey: The character Huldey experiences social/emotional rejection and loneliness, and discusses suicidal ideation. The character Huldey murders her sister Agatha and is infatuated with the character Emilie.
Emilie: The character Emilie is deceived into traveling to the home of Agatha and Huldey. Emilie falls in love with the character Agatha.
Marjory: The character Marjory intimidates the character Emilie and convinces/manipulates the character Huldey to murder her sister, Agatha.
The Mastiff: The character The Mastiff experiences and has frank discussions of depression. The Mastiff falls in love with and coercively threatens and controls the Moor-hen. It is implied that The Mastiff kills the Moor-hen.
A Moor-hen: The character A Moor-hen is recovering from an injury while growing close to the character The Mastiff, who later coercively threatens and controls the Moor-hen. It is implied that The Mastiff kills the Moor-hen.
