Few artists have been as closely associated with a single technique as Andy Warhol is with silkscreening. He wasn’t an innovator in the medium, however, as is sometimes claimed; it came to him with a rich and complex history he’d encountered already in his youth. With the advent of Pop art, Warhol built on that history to transform silkscreening from a mere technique into a true bearer of meaning.
Blake Gopnik is working on the forthcoming biography Andy Warhol: A Life As Art.
